Piecing Blocks
Most blocks can be pieced by hand or by machine. To hand piece it is easier to draw a stitching line around a template of the finished size on the reverse of the fabric and then add a seam allowance before cutting. Following the pattern, place two pieces with right sides together and pin at right angles to the seam. Stitch with a running stitch along the marked line, starting at the seam line not the edge of the piece and finish off with a few backstitches.
Where you have cut out the pieces using a rotary cutter, you will need to mark up the stitching line before hand sewing as these already incorporate a seam allowance/ it is much easier using a sewing machine with a special patchwork 1/4" foot or adjusting your normal sewing foot accordingly. As with hand piecing align the two pieces, pin together at right angles and stitch from edge to edge. Press open.
